Overview

Hurricane Electric Network Tools is a network utility and diagnostic application designed for network engineers, system administrators, and technology enthusiasts. We believe strongly in user privacy. We do not track, collect, store, profile, or sell your personal data.

Ephemeral Diagnostic Data

All network diagnostic functions—including Ping, Traceroute, DNS Lookups, iPerf2/iPerf3 throughput tests, WHOIS, Port Scanner, HTTP Inspector, RPKI/ROA Validation, NTP Time Offset, Raw Socket Probes, and Bonjour/mDNS discovery—are initiated strictly on-demand by the user.

The resulting diagnostic data is displayed directly on your device. Diagnostic results are ephemeral: they are processed in-memory to display the output to you and are not transmitted to any telemetry, advertising, or remote analytics servers.

Device Permissions and Why We Request Them

The application requests specific Android permissions strictly to perform the network utilities you choose to run:

• Internet Access (INTERNET): Required to perform all outbound network queries, tests, and diagnostics to target servers and hosts you specify.
• Network & Wi-Fi State (ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE, ACCESS_WIFI_STATE, ACCESS_LOCAL_NETWORK, NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES): Used to inspect and display active network interfaces, IP addresses, link speed, and connection status on your device.
• Location Permissions (ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION): Android OS requires location permissions to allow apps to read Wi-Fi network details (such as SSID and BSSID). The application never records, tracks, or transmits your geographic GPS coordinates.
• Camera (CAMERA): Why does the app want use of a camera? To be able to scan and decode an OTP (One-Time Password) QR code. Camera frames are processed in-memory in real time solely to decode the QR code. The image is not retained or uploaded.
• Foreground Services & Notifications (FOREGROUND_SERVICE, POST_NOTIFICATIONS): Used to keep long-running diagnostic tasks (such as iPerf network bandwidth tests or continuous ping sweeps) active when the app is in the background, displaying an ongoing status notification until the task completes.

Location & GeoIP Services

The app utilizes an offline MaxMind GeoIP database bundled locally within the application solely to determine geographic proximity to nearby diagnostic hosts (such as selecting optimal regional DNS test servers). No external GeoIP API calls or web queries are made, and this does not identify you personally or track your movements.

Third-Party Sharing & Analytics

The application does not include any third-party ad networks, tracking SDKs, or behavioral analytics frameworks. No information is sold, rented, or shared with third parties.
